
The Bombing of Sherborne. 30th September 1940
Discover more about the Sherborne Bombing 30th Sept 1940. The tour visits sites across the town and relies on contemporary accounts from eye witnesses and related original evidence. Only done once a year to coincide with the anniversary. Guided tour lead by local Blue Badge Tourist Guide Paul Birbeck. Meet outside Sherborne Abbey. for this 2½ hour walk.
The route involves a guided tour of the key locations, supported by photographs of the locations after the bombing and accounts from survivors who I have interviewed in recent years. Half Moon Street to Horsecastles a out to Lenthey. Return around the Prep and Sherborne School grounds to the corner of Cheap Street., Through Swan Yard on to Newland and Tinneys Lane, returning via Hound Street to Cheap Street down to South Street, finishing at the Bombing memorial outside the Abbey. Approximately 3 miles at a gentle walking pace. Good walking shoes and appropriate outdoor clothing recommended. The Cross Keys pub will offer a 10% discount on non-alcoholic drinks to clients at the end of the walk.
